The city of Amer lay half-asleep, wrapped in a soft morning mist, and the faint rhythm of drums and temple bells drifting through the valley. Standing on the ancient stones as the sun rises, it’s easy to see why the Amer Wall—often called the Great Wall of Amer— remains one of Jaipur’s most beautiful places to visit.
Snaking across the rugged ridges of the Aravali Hills, this 16th century fortification once shielded Amber Fort and the city beyond. Built of red sandstone and marble, much of the wall has survived the passage of time, and you can still walk along its dramatic walls today.

Can you Still Climb the Amer Wall?
At the moment, climbing the wall is officially not allowed due to safety concerns following a tragic lightning strike in 2021. The main entrances are even marked as “permanently closed” on Google Maps and are sometimes patrolled by police.
That said, there is still an alternative way up, which we’ll share in this guide. Just keep in mind that if you choose to climb, you do so at your own risk.

Best Time to Visit
The Amer Wall is best visited during the winter months, from November to early March, when Jaipur’s weather is pleasantly cool and the chances of rain are low.
For the best experience, time your climb for sunrise or sunset. Not only are the temperatures more comfortable, but the soft light also makes for incredible photos.
Tip: Early mornings can be cold, so pack a jacket and don’t forget to carry some water.

When we visited in late January at sunrise, we had the entire wall to ourselves as we watched the horizon slowly shift into shades of orange and pink.

How to Reach Amer Wall
The Amer Wall lies about 8 kilometers north of Jaipur city, and getting there is fairly simple.
Rickshaw: Readily available throughout the city center, rickshaws are a budget-friendly way to get to Amer. The ride takes about 30 minutes, but keep in mind it can get quite chilly in the open vehicle during early mornings.
We paid around ₹200 ($2) for our ride, though prices vary slightly depending on the time of day.
Uber/Ola: Ride-sharing apps also operate in Jaipur and are a comfortable option, especially in the winter. That said, availability can be limited in the early hours, so you might want to consider booking a private car through your hotel or guesthouse.
Tip: For sunrise visits, arrange your transport in advance, as it can be tricky to find one so early in the morning.

Climbing the Amer Wall
Note: Climbing the wall is officially prohibited at the moment. If you decide to go, please be aware that you do so at your own risk.
Where to Start
With the main entrances closed, the best way up begins at the steps near Varahi Mata Temple, tucked away at the end of a quiet street. Pause at the temple gate, which was carved out of the original Amer Wall to allow passage through its massive structure.

To the left, a few worn steps lead to a narrow, slightly overgrown path. Follow it until you reach another flight of stairs climbing directly onto the wall’s ramp. From here, you’ll find yourself overlooking courtyards and rooftops, with the wall passing straight through a neighborhood.
Continue southward, where the climb grows steeper and the views begin to open up: houses shrink below, and the hills of Amer stretch out ahead.

What to Expect
Built in the 16th century from red sandstone and marble, the wall’s original length is uncertain, but long sections remain intact and walkable. The climb to the highest watchtower takes around 20 to 30 minutes, depending on your pace and fitness.
The ramparts are wider than expected, which makes the climb feel secure even where the hillside drops away. The path alternates between steep steps and broad walkways, and while some steps are uneven or partly overgrown, the wall itself is surprisingly clean, with only the occasional brightly colored kite tangled in the stones.

As you make your way up, pause now and then to take in the views. To one side, thorny bushes and hardy cacti cling to the ridges; on the other, temple domes rise from Jaipur’s skyline, with the imposing Amer Fort commanding the hillside.

Good to Know Before You Climb
The Amer Wall cuts directly past homes and temples, so be mindful of the local community—avoid lingering in front of houses, keep noise low, and take care not to leave litter. While the climb feels safe thanks to the wall’s broad ramparts, the steps can be uneven, so wear sturdy shoes and avoid attempting the walk in heavy rain or after dark.
And that’s our guide to climbing the Amer Wall in Jaipur.
If you can, aim for a sunrise visit. Watching the day begin from the wall is unforgettable, and it also sets you up perfectly to continue exploring once Amber Fort opens its gates. From there, it’s an easy walk to nearby highlights like the famous stepwell and the Shri Jagat Shiromani Ji Temple.
